In my wanderings over the years, my eye has invariably been drawn to rough stuff – walls with peeling paint, rusty metal sidings, and derelict buildings.

While outside traditional concepts of beauty and art, these images, with their colourful textures and abstract forms, fascinate me. I see them as painterly visions worth preserving in photographs.

This photo portfolio brings together 42 of these found-art images. I hope they catch your eye as much as they did mine.

Rough Stuff

The body of my photographic work depicts different ways of seeing by focusing on abstractions and highlighting fragments of a greater whole. By so doing, I hope to entice viewers to look at ordinary and everyday things in a more perceptive way.

The photos below were taken at Pier 4 in Hamilton harbour. They abstract fragments of ‘Canadian Transfer’, a massive ocean-going freighter that serves Hamilton’s once thriving steel industry.

In providing abstract images of an ordinary freighter, the photos revolutionize our way of seeing, shedding a new light on Hamilton’s harbour and shipping industry.
